As an upcoming photographer who has already invested in his or her first Olympus DSLR body, you know that one of the more important components of taking good pictures includes good quality Olympus camera lenses. Other aspects of photography, such as your Olympus flash, are also integral to taking great pictures since it can improve the lighting quality of your images. However, without a good lens, your image resolution is taken at least several notches down in terms of quality. Different types of pictures need different lenses, such as macro and micro, but irrespective of what type of photography you are interested in, the quality of the lens is of utmost important.
Since every lens costs quite a bit or money – in some cases some Olympus camera lenses cost more than the SLR body – don’t waste your money by buying any lens. Make sure that it fits the style you want by keeping in mind several points.
Four Traits to Look for in Olympus Camera Lenses
The first Olympus camera lens I bought was decent, but that was due to luck. I didn’t know what to look for! Now, after having gone through the research, I have been able to get lenses better suited for the type of photography I wanted.
As an upcoming photographer, there are several things you need to look when it comes to buying Olympus Camera lenses. Regardless of the following 4 points, make sure the optics are good, which you can ensure by looking at reviews or by testing!
1 – Aperture: Aperture controls the amount of light to hit your SLR image sensor. An example is f/1.4, which coincides with a large opening. Aperture does two things. It changes the depth of focus in your image. It also increase the light on your sensor, which is useful in a variety of scenario.
2 – Focal Length: What type of photography are you interested in? The focal length you choose is important. Do you want to do landscape or portrait photography? Different Olympus camera lenses are applicable in different scenarios.
3 – Stability: This is to decrease the effects of blur. Some camera bodies, such as my Olympus E-510, already has image stabilization built in. Others do not, and thus you should look for Olympus camera lenses that incorporate this. It is worth the extra money.
4 – Quality: Quality is much harder to describe, but is something you will start to fully appreciate with experience. Some of the cheaper lenses do not perfectly sharpen your image, which leads to a reduction in your image quality. Imagine using a 10 MP camera only to have pictures that are equivalent to a 5 MP camera. That is what happens with low quality Olympus camera lenses. To really get a handle on this, read online review, and see you local camera store for a trial.
And remember, always protect your lens by using several possible techniques! Otherwise, you’re just asking for trouble.
